Action Alert
Tell Congress: Exclude Abortion from "Health Care Reform"!
WASHINGTON (Updated June 24, 2009) – Democratic congressional leaders, who are currently in control of both houses of Congress, are working with the Obama White House to fast-track sweeping "health care reform" legislation -- legislation that Barack Obama has already pledged will incorporate expansive pro-abortion provisions.

Committees in the Senate and House are already working on bills that would result in mandatory insurance coverage of abortion on demand, and federal subsidies for abortion.
On July 17, 2007, during Barack Obama’s campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, he appeared before the annual conference of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. Speaking of his plans for “health care reform,” Obama said, “in my mind, reproductive care is essential care, basic care, so it is at the center, the heart of the plan that I propose.” [emphasis added] Under his plan, Obama explained, people could choose to keep their existing private health care plans, but “insurers are going to have to abide by the same rules in terms of providing comprehensive care, including reproductive care ... that’s going to be absolutely vital.” Regarding Obama’s statements, the Chicago Tribune reported: “Asked about his proposal for expanded access to health insurance, Obama said it would cover ‘reproductive-health services.’ Contacted afterward, an Obama spokesman said that included abortions.” (“Democrats Pledge Support for Wide Access to Abortion,” by Mike Dorning, Chicago Tribune, July 18, 2007.) The Obama campaign elaborated on this commitment to mandate abortion coverage on other occasions. “The pro-abortion movement sees federal ‘health care reform’ legislation as a golden opportunity to force-feed abortion into every nook and cranny of the health-care delivery system,” explained NRLC Federal Legislative Director Douglas Johnson. “Their goal, as they sometimes put it, is to ‘mainstream’ abortion."If Obama and his allies succeed, "the result will be a very large increase in the number of abortions performed in America," Johnson said.To read a detailed article on this subject that originally appeared in the April edition of National Right to Life News, click here. On June 24, 2009, NRLC sent a letter to members of the U.S. House, expressing opposition to a draft bill released by the chairs of the three House committees with jurisdiction over the issue. To read or download the letter (PDF format), click here.
Johnson noted that the authors of the bills hope to achieve sweeping pro-abortion effects without even mentioning the word "abortion." For example, a bill proposed by Senator Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) would grant authority to a "Medical Advisory Council," appointed by the Secretary of the Health and Human Services, to specify what services must be included in all health insurance plans. A draft bill released by the House Democratic leadership on June 19 contains a similar provision.“Pro-life Americans should vigorously oppose any federal ‘health care reform’ legislation that does not explicitly exclude abortion from the scope of any government-defined or government-mandated package of health care services,” Johnson explained. “A bill that delegates authority to some government board to require abortion coverage is simply a covert, two-step method for imposing sweeping pro-abortion mandates on employers and all citizens.” The imposition of sweeping pro-abortion mandates as part of “health care reform” is currently the top priority of many pro-abortion organizations, such as the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA). These organizations are pushing for the abortion mandates both in public statements and in less visible lobbying efforts. What You Can Do Now

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A leading pro-life group has uncovered a questionnaire the campaign of Barack Obama filed with a pro-abortion web site. The survey makes it clear that Obama's national health care plan would include abortions and that they would likely be funded at taxpayer expense.

The Obama campaign responded to a question about health care from the pro-abortion RH Reality Check web site.

"Senator Obama believes that reproductive health care is basic health care," the campaign said, using the phrase that abortion advocates employ to refer to abortion.

"His health care plan will create a new public plan, which will provide coverage of all essential medical services. Reproductive health care is an essential service," the Obama campaign added.

The Obama camp also made it clear that any private insurance companies wanting to participate would also be required to provide abortion coverage.

"And private insurers that want to participate will have to treat reproductive care in the same way," the Obama campaign responded.

Tony Perkins, the president of the Family Research Council, says the answers make it clear to him that Obama would fund abortions with federal taxpayer dollars and make people in private insurance plans pay for abortions because insurance companies would pass on the additional costs to customers.

"While the health care debate has largely focused on whom the candidates' plans will fund, more Americans need to understand exactly what they would fund," Perkins explains.

"According to these [questionnaire] excerpts, Obama's plan would treat abortion as a basic health care mandate for both taxpayers and private health insurers to subsidize," Perlkins said.

Previously, the Obama campaign confirmed that his health care plan would cover abortions.

John McCormack, a writer for the magazine Weekly Standard, hoped to resolve the question of whether the Obama plan required abortion coverage in a recent conversation with the Obama campaign.

"During a campaign conference call about health care yesterday, I asked Obama-Biden surrogate Gov. Kathleen Sebelius if Obama's health care plan would mandate coverage for all legal abortions," he wrote this month.

"I really don’t know the specifics of that," Sebelius replied.

"An Obama-Biden spokesman told me via email that he'd find an answer to my question. But subsequent emails and phone calls in the past 24 hours from me to Obama-Biden spokesmen have gone unanswered," McCormack adds.

"Apparently the Obama-Biden campaign doesn't think it needs to provide basic factual information about their candidate's health care plan. Will anyone in the mainstream media hold Obama accountable?" McCormack asks.

Without a specific answer, voters are forced to guess what Obama's plan would do.

McCormack points to the speech Obama gave to Planned Parenthood activists in July 2007, where he pledged to cover abortions in any national health care plan.

"In my mind reproductive care is essential care. It is basic care, and so it is at the center, the heart of the plan that I propose," Obama said. "We're going to set up a public plan that all persons and all women can access if they don’t have health insurance. It'll be a plan that will provide all essential services, including reproductive services"

Mike Dorning of the Chicago Tribune followed up on the Obama speech and reported that an Obama representative said "reproductive services" included abortions.

This is what you will be forced to pay for (Remember these are innocent babies. They have not done anything wrong. Not murdered anyone, not blown up buildings, not robbed anyone. They had the misfortunes to be conceived) also remember that conceiving a child requires an act called intercourse, in which two adults engage in. That is a choice act! We are not talking about rape. Most abortions are the result of consensual sex and buyers remorse. Lies and deception is used to cover up callous killings of thousands of babies. It's bad enough this is happening, but now they have the audacity, not of hope, but of despair and force millions of people against their conscience to finance the killing of innocent babies.

To call Abortion basic "reproductive health" is misleading. Basic reproductive health would be pre natal care. Abortions have nothing to do with re productions and everyhting with killing.
